Owen Sound

Owen Sound is a city of about 22,000 people at the mouth of the Sydenham River on Georgian Bay, in Grey County, Ontario. It sits in a deep natural harbour surrounded by the Niagara Escarpment, which gives the city a dramatic setting that most places this size cannot match. Two significant waterfalls, Inglis Falls and Jones Falls, are within a ten-minute drive of downtown.

The city has been through the cycle that a lot of mid-sized Ontario industrial towns went through: a busy port and manufacturing economy through the mid-20th century, a long decline as those industries moved or closed, and a slow rebuild around arts, tourism, and the particular appeal of affordable waterfront living. Housing here is still significantly cheaper than most of the Georgian Bay corridor, which draws both retirees and younger families who have been priced out of Collingwood or the GTA.

Downtown Owen Sound has more going on than you would expect. The Tom Thomson Art Gallery is a genuine regional institution. The Summerfolk music festival brings thousands of people every August. Harrison Park, a 40-hectare public park along the Sydenham River, is one of the best municipal parks in Ontario by almost any measure. The farmers market runs weekly through the growing season.

Owen Sound is also the starting point for drives north to the Bruce Peninsula and Tobermory. Highway 6 and Highway 10 both converge here, making the city a natural hub for anyone exploring Grey-Bruce. The harbour itself is quieter than it once was, but the waterfront trail, the marina, and the views across the bay still define the place.
